There are some industry-specific licensing requirements and compliance rules that must be met before gambling licenses are issued. The island of Malta continues to experience an upswing in online gambling. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) issues the most online gambling licenses in Europe. Malta joined the EU in 2004 and was the first country to introduce online gambling laws. Its first gambling licenses to relevant software publishers were issued the year the MGA was established. A premises licence, issued under the Gambling Act 2005, is required for any premises where an individual or company proposes to offer premises based gambling and are issued in respect of specific premises.
The Gambling Commission is the national regulator of gambling in Great Britain and was created by the Gambling Act 2005, replacing the Gaming Board. Residents may also make representations when an existing licence is varied or being reviewed. The Gambling Act 2005 places responsibility for gaming premises from the magistrates to us (the Licensing Authority) and increased the powers of the Gambling Commission. Premises such as public houses may only have category C and D machines.
